Artwork Description
This artwork incorporates Batik fabric from the iconic Singapore Airlines flight attendant uniform—a design closely tied to the image of the “Singapore Girl,” and a symbol recognised worldwide as distinctly Singaporean. By integrating this Batik into the composition, I explore the cultural identity and emotional resonance carried by a garment that represents movement, hospitality, and the crossing of borders.
The title, In a Land Far, Far Away, reflects the experience of travel itself: the sensation of being suspended between destinations, identities, and states of mind. When we fly, we inhabit an in-between space—a kind of no-man’s-land where time stretches and compresses, where we are neither here nor there. It is a liminal realm that heightens our awareness of distance, longing, anticipation, and transition.
Through this work, I reflect on these suspended moments and the quiet introspection they invite. The Batik becomes a metaphor for cultural anchors we carry with us, even as we move through places that feel unfamiliar. In this in-between realm, we encounter both dislocation and possibility—echoing the overarching theme of between realms.
