Artwork Description
“Beyond the Horizon” is a semi-abstract piece. It has all the expressive mark-making and painterly textures that an abstract artwork would have, but it also has motifs that are more literal. These motifs help to tell the story. This artwork is a triptych – a work of art that is divided into three panels or sections.
This artwork is a seascape and it is specifically the ocean in South East Asia – the sea surrounding Singapore. In the ocean part of the artwork, there are Chinese porcelain patterns, Chinese Ink drawings, Dragons, Clouds and other typical Chinese-style motifs. There are other motifs that speak about the story of sea travel – beautiful old voyages. Old World Maps are screen-printed and highlighted in gold. There are also elements of South East Asia in the form of fabric – Batik and Chinese Silks that have been stitched and embroidered onto the canvas. The pops of red and orange Chinese silk represent the ships sitting on the horizon in Singapore’s waters.
The horizon line sits quite far up on the artwork – this composition gives the viewer a sense of space and a feeling of being immersed in the sea.
The primary colour in this artwork, Blue, is often associated as the colour of Hope and calm.
There is a sense of movement across the three panels of the artwork, helped by the wave-like fishing nets.
This is a mixed media piece which is a combination of many different techniques. Photographs and hand drawings have been made into silkscreens and hand-printed onto the canvas. Splashes and drips of ink have been used to create texture on the canvas. Machine embroidery has been used to sew down strips of fabric as well as highlighting certain motifs.
This piece looks peaceful and calming when viewed from a distance. However, when viewing up close, there is a sense of energy created by the pastel and colour pencil scribble-marks - mimicking the energy or life under the ocean.
The 3 panels of the artwork forms a long horizontal shape, which will work well to fill the wall above a couch, bed, console table or dining room table.
