Artwork Description
“Beyond the Night” is inspired by traditional Chinese landscape paintings.
However, if you take a closer look you will notice that there is something less traditional about this landscape. Singapore’s much loved raintrees are seen throughout the piece. Tropical island-like formations are found in the water reflections, these too come from Singapore’s green spaces, namely the MacRitchie rainforest.
Like a Shan Shui artwork (Shan – mountain, Shui – water) this piece is more interested in capturing the emotions and the way the landscape makes you feel, instead of aspiring to realistically capture what the landscape looks like.
Working with Chinese ink, black has been chosen as the primary colour. This is a reflection of the different seasons we go through in life, some of which can be dark, confusing and filled with painful emotions. However the entire base layer of this artwork has been created with blocks of silver leaf, which shimmer and shine. This brings new life to the black ink, reminding one, that beyond the dark times there is always a light, there is always a hope to reach out to.
