Artwork Description

“Spirit Mountain Lake” was inspired by traditional Chinese ink paintings. In particular the Shan Shui artworks, which are more interested in painting the emotions and the way the landscape makes you feel, instead of aspiring to realistically capture what the landscape looks like. In these artworks I used AI to create imaginary landscapes, I took traditional Chinese landscape paintings and merged these together with tropical foliage found here in Singapore. The foliage images for this artwork were gathered from many photos taken, while walking in the MacRitchie rainforest. Like most of my artworks that speak of Singapore, “Spirit Mountain Lake”, also contains elements that have come from my surroundings. However, as with many of my more recent artworks, this piece goes beyond the surface of pure representation, the seen, and delves deeper into feelings which are unseen.

It was important for me to create an imaginary landscape as these pieces become more dreamlike and move deeper into the subconscious, the thoughts and dreams that we may be processing in the late hours of the night. There are times in life where we have to navigate through dark periods, which is part of the reason why I chose to paint with Chinese ink making black the primary colour.

But not everything in this artwork is black, fine thread-like silver patterns and white light sparkle throughout the piece. Reminding one, that beyond the dark times there is always a light, there is always a hope to reach out to.

To date there are two other artworks in this series, they are called  “Beyond the Night” & “Night Meanders”.
