Artwork Description

This artwork incorporates military camouflage fabric from the uniforms of the Singapore Army—a material I view as part of Singapore’s national fabric, iconic and culturally significant. Fabric has always played a central role in my practice; each textile carries its own history, its own memories, and its own embedded narrative.

Jungle Trekking reflects both literal and metaphorical journeys. The reference to soldiers navigating dense Singaporean jungles becomes a metaphor for the challenging terrains we all traverse in life. The photograph layered into the piece was taken at MacRitchie Reservoir, one of Singapore’s rare pockets of primary rainforest nestled within an urban landscape. Its lush beauty speaks to resilience, grounding, and the unexpected wildness that still exists amid the city.

The pixelated square motifs echo the structure of camouflage but also symbolise the way life unfolds in fragments—small pieces that only form a clear picture when viewed in retrospect. When we look back, we often see how these moments connect, how experiences that once felt disjointed now form a coherent whole. Moving forward, these reflections offer grounding, comfort, and perspective.

Through the interplay of military fabric, rainforest imagery, and geometric patterning, Jungle Trekking becomes both a map and a meditation on the paths we walk, the obstacles we navigate, and the meaning we make along the way.
