Artwork Description
The artworks in the Kimono Gardens series are made up of rich vibrant colours and diverse textures.
The inspiration for these artworks comes from the intricate textiles of Japanese kimono as well as the beautiful gardens discovered all over Kyoto. To bring in a natural aesthetic, wood was used as my artwork surface. Original photographs, taken whilst I was exploring in Japan, have been digitally transferred onto the wooden surface. Many layers have then been added such as coloured pencil drawings and watercolour painting. These techniques have enhanced certain colours, drawing more focused attention to them. The original composition has been further altered by silkscreen printed layers made up of traditional Japanese motifs. These patterns are shown in sparkling gold leaf, lush velvety flocks or traditional textiles. Kimono Gardens can stand as a cultural treasure on their own or they can be exhibited in sets as the patterns and colours enhance and interplay with each other.
