Artwork Description
The Peranakan Forest Series is a sculptural artwork. Wooden strips extending beyond the constraints of the edge. Like a forest, these wooden strips are a stylised portrayal of a row of trees, standing tall in repetition. The contemporary composition is contrasted with the traditional imagery that has been printed onto the wooden surface.
Close-up images of Peranakan porcelain, beadwork and embroidered cloth can be seen. These images were all sourced on a trip to the Peranakan Museum in Singapore.
Contrasting with these Peranakan craft works are images of plants and greenery. The reason for this merge of subject matter is to do with Lee Kuan Yew’s, vision of Singapore becoming a ‘Garden City’.
A ‘Garden City’ is not just utilitarian, it is a place that flourishes largely due to its beauty. Like beautiful artworks, a beautiful natural environment plays an important role in our mental health and overall well-being.
