Artwork Description
Rewilding the Muted is a call to step away from our digital devices and return to nature—to reawaken our senses and rediscover ourselves in the great outdoors. Within the artwork, binary code made up of 1s and 0s forms an inscribed language that, when decoded, echoes the title of the piece, reinforcing the dialogue between technology and the natural world.
Living in Singapore—the Garden City—we experience a constant tension between the constructed and the organic, between concrete and foliage. Like many urban environments, life here moves at a relentless pace. Rewilding the Muted invites us to slow down, pause, breathe, and find clarity through stillness and meditation. It reminds us of what truly matters: connection, presence, and peace.
The work explores the contrast between manicured gardens and the untamed wildness of nature. Studies have shown that spending time outdoors is not merely enjoyable—it is essential for our wellbeing and mental health. The earth, created as a gift to humankind, reflects the image of its Creator; we, too, are made to engage with and delight in its beauty.
Lush green foliage and tropical plants root the piece in the landscape of Southeast Asia. Yet, as we step into this imagined overgrown jungle—a green portal—we are invited to slow down and notice the intricate details of palm leaves crafted from Chinese silk and Indonesian batik. These traditional textiles carry the cultural stories of the people who call Singapore home, connecting us to a time before skyscrapers dominated the skyline. In the kampong villages, life was deeply intertwined with nature—a harmony we are now being called to rediscover.
Rewilding the Muted is both a reflection and an invitation: to find balance between the digital and the natural, and to listen once again to the quiet voice of the earth.
